Introduction

katha is an open-source companion for Kavita that learns what each reader actually loves and picks their next book from your library — one tap sends the epub straight to their Kindle, on the rhythm you choose (weekly by default).

The name is Sanskrit — कथा, kathā, "story."

The problem

A large library is hard to choose from. Readers open Kavita, feel the paralysis of hundreds of titles, and close it again. The books are there; the nudge isn't.

What katha does

katha learns what each reader actually enjoys — it remembers the books they send to their Kindle, ranks the authors they love, and widens outward from there (same author, then adjacent authors, then the rest of your shelves), so the picks get better over time instead of repeating.

Then it pushes: a quiet, well-designed email with a single idea — here's a book from your library you'll love — and one tap sends the epub straight to the reader's Kindle. No browsing, no login.

It arrives on the rhythm each reader chooses — weekly by default, or fortnightly, monthly, or quarterly — and any reader can pull a fresh pick on demand with a "send me one now" link, independent of the schedule. The cadence is the heartbeat that keeps the habit alive, not the point; the point is the right book, found for you, one tap from reading.

Why it's different

  • No new account. Readers already exist in Kavita. katha never asks them to sign up or log in — every action in the email is a signed, expiring magic link.
  • It respects your library. katha opens Kavita's database read-only. It never writes to it.
  • It's small. A single distroless static binary — a web process for the links and a scheduled run-due for the sending. No runtime, no framework sprawl.
